Homemade Baby Food - Carrots

Okay so I am really into this "making my own baby food" kick. Today I made carrots. I tossed a bag of baby carrots in a pot and covered it with water. I let the carrots boil for about an hour (or until softened). Then I drained and rinsed them. I mashed them with a potato masher and added some water. To make them even creamier, I put them in the blender with more water and blended until the consistency of jarred baby food. Then I used a Tbsp scoop and filled 2 ice cube trays. I froze them with some foil covering. Once they freeze, I will put the cubes in a labeled bag (food and date). Then I just pop a cube or two into a bowl and let thaw overnight. It's super easy, super healthy, and super cheap. I think the baby carrots cost about $2.00. For the equivalent amount of packaged baby food, I probably would have spent at least $5-10.

  1. I just made carrots and sweet potatoes over the weekend! Making baby food really is easy. It's a bit more work with the dishes and all but it is so nice to know you're giving baby something pure.

Carrots take forever to steam don't they?

  2. Lisa, I am hoping once Nathan takes all kinds, I will make it once a month. I think that will be easier. Yes, carrots take a long time. How did you do your sweet potatoes?

  3. Ashley - i made most of Jackson's baby food. I found with carrots, zucchini, peas, and grean beans using a blender was much easier than a food processor. The fp just didn't get the grains fine enough and Jackson would gag on them. Also, you can totally defrost them in the microwave. They say not too, but that's because the microwave can get the food too hot and the authors of the websites/books don't want that liability. If I remember correctly I always did 1 min 20 secs and sometimes would have to put it in again for 10-20 secs. I always made sure they weren't hot enough and if they were a little too hot I'd just put an ice cube in it to cool it down to the right temp!

  4. Lindsey,

My fp died the day I did sp. I am using the blender and like that. Thanks for the tip on microwaving.

  5. Anon - I just peeled the sweet potatoes, cut up into small chunks and steamed, then pureed in the FP. Pretty easy. We haven't tried them yet but I think they turned out ok!
